GOOGLE are now using AI generated summaries to answer your questions.
This new feature usually appears at the very top of the search engine results page.
TRAFCK revealed earlier this month that AI Overviews were set to be launched on Google Search.
It is predicted that this feature will be available to more than a billion users by the end of the year.
Prior to AI overviews being rolled out, Google assured users that it has been tested ‘billions’ of times.
Google said: “People have already used AI Overviews billions of times through our experiment in Search Labs.
“They like that they can get both a quick overview of a topic and links to learn more.
“We’ve found that with AI Overviews, people use Search more, and are more satisfied with their results.”
However, it did not take long for users to find a long list of problems with the search engine’s latest feature.
One user found that AI advised them to glue pizza and eat rocks.
Another answer wrongly stated that Barack Obama was the first Muslim president in the US.
It stated that there are no countries in Africa that start with the letter ‘K’.
And it stated that snakes are mammals – so it’s far from the finished product.
Google claimed the incorrect answers were the result of users searching for ‘uncommon queries’.
It said: “The examples we’ve seen are generally very uncommon queries, and aren’t representative of most people’s experiences.
“The vast majority of AI Overviews provide high-quality information, with links to dig deeper on the web.
“We conducted extensive testing before launching this new experience, and will use these isolated examples as we continue to refine our systems overall.”
Can you turn off AI Overviews?
Given the shaky start for AI Overviews, it comes as no surprise that some users are keen to get rid of it.
Currently, you can not turn off AI Overviews.
However, there are several things you can do to avoid seeing them.
One option is to use an alternative browser to Google Chrome.
Another option is to use ‘Web’ search on Google rather than ‘All’.
Alternatively, you can download a Chrome extension that blocks AI Overviews.
Google has warned users that this is just the start of how they plan to change Google search.
A statement read: “This is just a glimpse of how we’re reimagining Google Search — combining the very best of Search today with the Gemini model’s advanced capabilities.
“Soon, Google will do the searching, simplifying, researching, planning, brainstorming and so much more.”
If you have seen any bizarre results from the AI Overview tool, we’d love to hear about them.
