Why is Google Discover not working? Six ways to fix it

GOOGLE DISCOVER is used by millions of users around the world everyday.

The automated feed of stories you see will be based on your search interests and activity.

It is the easiest way to read content that you care about without having to search for it.

If your Discover feed stops working, there are several things you can do fix the issue.

  • Make sure Google Discover is turned on

Google Discover is an optional addition to the Google Chrome or Google app.

To turn it on, click the three dots in the bottom right corner of your page.

Then hit settings and scroll down to ‘Discover and following’.

Make sure the toggle is switched – it should be blue when it is turned on.

Alternatively, this is how you can turn off your Discover feed if you’d prefer.

  • Google app issues

Discover can be found in the Google App and on the mobile version of Chrome.

Like any other app, the Google App can suffer with temporary glitches.

To make sure this is not the issue causing your Discover feed to not load, close the app and restart it.

  • Internet connection issues

Google Discover needs an internet connection to source the stories for your news feed.

Without a connection, the feed will appear blank.

Check your WiFi connection in your mobile settings to make sure this is not the issue.

If your WiFi connection shows as strong and fully working, try loading Discover on 3g, 4g or 5g.

  • Background data needs to be running

Discover will not work if background data is not enabled.

Google Discover needs background data to update the news feed.

To sort this, you need to head to settings on your mobile devices.

Search for the Google app and make sure ‘Background app refreshed’ is turned on.

  • Restart your mobile device

Like with any other technical glitch, it’s a good idea to turn your device off and restart it.

This will close all background processes and apps and temporarily files will be wiped.

It will also help connection issues as networks will be reset when the phone reboots.

  • Clear your cache data

Corrupt cache data could be the reason why your Discover feed is not loading.

You need to manually wipe the cache data then restart your phone to fix the issue.

To do this, you need to head to settings on your phone.

Click storage, apps then the Google App and select ‘Clear cache’.
